Technology Advancements in Libraries

Public libraries have been advancing with leaps and bounds over the past decade. With so many new computer programs, networking solutions, and social networking websites, it is amazing that public libraries are able to keep abreast of technology so effectively. With the many state budget cuts, it is difficult to update library systems and train the library staff to be adept with the many computerized advancements of today. Through grants, private funding, and a lot of volunteer work, many public libraries have not only been able to keep their doors open during these rough economic times, but they have updated their buildings, collections, and electronic systems to reflect the current needs and wants of their patrons.

Video Conferencing.

Nearly every library has book clubs for children, teens, and adults. By using video conferencing, patrons can connect with members of other libraries across the world and even authors to have group reading, video chats, and discussions related to the book of choice.

Skype is probably the most popular video conferencing software available. It is easy to download and depending on how you use it, it is usually free of charge. With Skype, users are able to add each other’s user names to their phone book and connect with them online. If the other person is away, their computer will ring like a telephone, alarming them of the impending chat. Once both users are connected, as long as each person has a video camera, they can see and speak with eachother.

Many libraries across the nation are treating their patrons to live videoconferencing sessions. Whether they have loved ones in the military or across town, patrons are able to go to their local public libraries to make a “high tech” phone call in a private booth. Being able to see and hear a loved friend or family member makes a big difference in people’s lives, and not everybody has a computer at home or understands how Skype works. Elderly people, especially, benefit from this trendy service offered by the public library.

E-readers and Video Games

These handheld devices make reading a snap. Now, instead of lugging expensive books around, patrons can pack hundreds of books into one little memory card for their iPod, e-readers, and kindles. These portable, electronic devices make reading fun and convenient. Read at school, on the bus, on a train or plane, or in a crowded museum; it doesn’t matter now because the days of bulky books and bent pages are over. Many libraries have iPads, nooks, and other readers that patrons are able to use while in the library and sometimes, take them out.

Video games have been used for decades as learning and coordination tools. Public libraries have been vamping up their children’s departments with fun and educational video games to help children learn vocabulary, reading, math, and science. Even foreign languages can easily be learned with video games.

Library Web Sites

Public libraries from coast to coast have been making their websites more user-friendly and accessible to everyone from kids to adults with special needs. There are many links to the new and informative information which composes these library sites. Some patrons are able to personalize their library experience by making lists of books read and books wanted, find book reviews, and browse the movie section. The technology really offers a lot of flexibility and personalization to the patrons of the library.

Websites have also expanded upon their online catalogs with the help of advanced programming. Hundreds of years of newspaper, yearbook, journal, and book archives have been uploaded for patrons to view online.

Oral histories are recorded and uploaded from mayors, sheriffs, teachers, and other influential patrons. These excellent technological advancements make using the library website a fun and exciting experience.

The Price of Technology

All of the modernizations in public libraries come with a hefty price tag. Just because these public libraries are performing a valuable service doesn’t mean that companies give their items to them at no cost. Just like anybody else, libraries have to come up with money for equipment, staff training, software, and licensing. Some libraries spend over $100,000 per year for licenses and other computer technology.

The services rendered are worth the cost. With the difficult economic times, many people cannot afford to buy music, watch movies, or have an internet connection. Thanks to the services of the public library, people who would normally go without can now enjoy these simple luxuries.

Sports Teams in Louisiana

While Louisiana is known for many things, sports aren’t one of the most prominent. Of the professional sports teams that do reside in Louisiana, most are based in the popular city of New Orleans and have very lucrative careers. There are however, many college and university sports teams located throughout the state which have gotten a lot of attention from athletic scouts all over the country.

NFL

New Orleans Saints. The Saints have been part of the National Football League since 1967 and have secured four division championships, one conference championship, and one league championship. The black and gold fleur-di-leis logo which adorns the team helmets is easily recognizable and symbolizes the French heritage of the state of Louisiana. The Saints have been playing in the enormous Louisiana Superdome which is located in New Orleans, since 1975. This is the world’s largest fixed dome structure and is quite an astonishing sight to behold.

NBA

New Orleans Hornets. The Hornets were founded in 1988 and were relocated to New Orleans from Charlotte, North Carolina in 2002. This professional basketball team holds one division title. Their colorful hornet logo is adorned with the colors Creole blue and Mardi Gras Gold to represent their festive and vibrant city. The Hornets play out of the New Orleans Arena which is adjacent to the Louisiana Superdome. The Arena is also the venue for many popular music concerts and events.

Roller Derby

Big Easy Rollergirls. The Big Easy Rollergirls are a professional roller derby team located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Roller derby is a full contact, high energy sport. This all girl team is a member of the WFTDA and was founded in 2005. Their 2006 Mardi Gras debut was disrupted due to Hurricane Katrina but was carried out in the following September. The teams of the Big Easy Rollergirls consist of the Confederacy of Punches, Crescent Wenches, and the Story Villains. These diverse athletes hold full-time employment as dental hygienists, waitresses, students, and home-makers.

Cajun Rollergirls. The Cajun Rollergirls are a professional roller derby team that was founded in 2008 and play out of Houma, Louisiana. This new team has only played for two seasons but has a history of helping the community. In 2008 the CRG donated an entire truckload of school supplies to a radio drive and in held their first Toys for Tots bar hop. In 2009, the team was invited to attend the San Fermin Nueva Orleans which is a Gulf Coast derby tradition.

College and University Sports Teams

There are many more educational institutions that have athletic teams than professional installations in Louisiana. Some of the popular college and university sports teams in Louisiana include:

During the 1920s, a Louisiana electrician strung lights along Front Street as a gift to the residents. Over the years, the lights display grew and grew with funding from local businesses. In the 1930s, the town expanded upon that tradition by funding a fireworks display, followed by parades, river barges, and a children’s parade in the 1970s. Cajun fiddles and accordions can be heard over the loud shuffle of dancing feet and screaming voices, resulting in quite a good time for all. In the 1750s, Cajuns were avid members of Louisiana, contributing to the farming, trapping, and fishing industries.

Louisiana Demographics Summary

Louisiana is a Southern state and the only state in the country to be divided by parishes rather than counties. There are about 4,533,372 residents in the state. Louisiana is a heavily multicultural state consisting of 18th century influences of French, Spanish, Native American, and African cultures. There are many different languages spoken in Louisiana. English, French, Spanish, Asian, and Native Americans are all represented in different areas of the state with a popular culture of different French Cajun and Creole dialects spoken mainly in the southern parishes.

Cajun and Creole Population

The southern portion of Louisiana is predominantly composed of people with Cajun and Creole ancestry. There are often heated debates about the similarities and differences between them. Differences in their language and cooking make up a great deal of these stand-offs. While there were many distinct differences throughout early history between them, the results of wars and laws have worked to meld the two ancestries into a culture with fewer divisions. Rather than separate them by race, language, or religion; they are both looked upon as a blended culture of people who were raised in French or Creole speaking homes and cultures.

Historically speaking, Cajuns descend from French-speaking Acadians, which is now New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Creoles are descendants of French settlers born in the state under ownership of France. White Creoles have mostly French and Spanish ancestry while Black Creoles retain the name because they were born into the colony. The term Louisiana Creole was coined during French and Spanish rule and consisted of the offspring of colonial men and enslaved women. As more colonial men started families with these women, a distinct class was formed. Many of these mixed-heritage families were very wealthy and involved in politics and the arts.

Today, Creoles have a blended culture of African, Spanish, and Native American ancestry. There is no defining line between Black and White Creoles. They are simply a group of people who were raised in the French or Creole-speaking culture.

African Americans

Louisiana has the greatest percentage of Black Americans in the country. The 2010 census reflects a 32.1% population of African Americans in the state.

European Americans

White people generally reside in northern Louisiana. About 62% of Louisiana’s population is made of Whites. Most of the ancestry comes from English, French, Welsh, and Scots Irish cultures.

Hispanic Americans

The population of Hispanic Americans continues to rise in Louisiana, especially in the Southern Parishes. About 2.4 % of the population consists of Hispanic Americans. Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans, Hondurans, and Nicaraguans have been immigrating to the state since the 1920’s and before.

Asian Americans

The Filipinos were the earliest Asian group to settle in Louisiana as early as the 1760’s. They were avid shrimpers and fishermen and founded a community in St. Bernard Parish. The original settlers mixed with the Hispanics in the region and the bloodlines were lost. However, Filipinos came back to the region during the 1900’s. Today, about 1.5% of Louisiana’s population is made of Asian Americans.
