PARIS (AP) — Bananas were thrown from the crowd to Brazil’s players to celebrate a goal in a friendly against Tunisia in Paris on Tuesday.

Forward Richarlison had just scored the team’s second goal in the 5-1 win at Parc des Princes when a banana was blocked in front of him and the other Brazilian celebrated near the corner flag. A bottle of water and other objects were also thrown at them.

Brazil used the match to make a statement against racism, with players posing before kick-off in front of a sign that read: “Without our black players, we wouldn’t have stars on our shirts” – above A reference to the five stars on the team crest representing five World Cup titles.

The Brazilian Football Federation condemned the incident and reinforced its position in the “fight against racism”.

The president of the federation said he was shocked by what happened.

“The punishment for these actions should be more severe,” said Ednaldo Rodríguez.

Brazilian media reported that stadium security personnel tried unsuccessfully to identify the person who threw the banana onto the field.
