Alkaid Gundogan scored a first-half penalty for four-time champions Germany. But Doan, who plays for German side Freiburg, scored to equalize in the 76th minute after German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer blocked a shot from Takumi Minamino.

Then Asano, who plays for German side Bochum, got clear of Nico Schlotterbeck and beat Neuer from a narrow angle in the 83rd.

This was the first competitive meeting between the two countries.

Before the match, German players covered their mouths during a team photo in apparent defiance of FIFA’s decision to halt plans to wear armbands to protest discrimination in host country Qatar.
