ROME (AP) — Atalanta squandered a chance to take the lead in Serie A when it was held to a 1-1 draw at home by promoted Cremonese on Sunday.
The result left Atalanta second but level on points with leaders Napoli and third-placed AC Milan, the defending champions.
Cremonese defender Emmanuel Valeri headed home his first goal in the 78th from a rebound, four minutes after Mirra Demeral headed home a free kick from Theon Koopminers to give Atalanta the lead.
Atalanta also had a goal disallowed by VAR after the hour mark when it was determined that Caleb Okoli had used his arm to block a free kick from Koopminers.
Cremonas, playing in the top division for the first time in 26 years, picked up their first point after opening the season with four straight losses against Sassuolo last week.
Atalanta produced twice as many shots and possessions as Cremonas (14 to 7) but had trouble finding the back of the net.
Napoli beat Spezia 1-0 on Saturday and Milan won 2-1 at Sampdoria.
Later, Juventus hosted Salernitana.
