LONDON (AP) — Chelsea signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona before the summer transfer window closed on Thursday, giving manager Thomas Tuchel a new striker in a season when they were unable to work with Romelu Lukaku.
Aubameyang, 33, returns to the Premier League after just seven months at Barcelona, where he moved after being released by Arsenal. The deal was reportedly worth $14 million.
“I have some unfinished business with the Premier League so it’s good to be back and really exciting,” said Aubameyang, who signed a two-year deal in a transfer announced by Chelsea almost 90 minutes after the deadline.
The west London club is the biggest spender in Europe after spending around £280m this window.
Aubameyang will not be immediately available for Chelsea this week after suffering a jaw injury in the home attack in Spain. Armed robbers punched Gabon International in the face and forced him to open a safe for the jewelry, officials said.
Aubameyang, who has scored 13 goals in 23 games in total for Barcelona, was expected to be sidelined for several weeks.
The Gabonese striker played for Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund.
Lukaku is Inter Milan’s seventh most expensive footballer after joining Chelsea for $135m in less than a year on loan.
