BERLIN (AP) – The wonder-leader Union Berlin keeps working wonders in the Bundesliga.
Danilo Dukki headed home the game-winning goal in the seventh minute of added time to secure a 2-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, returning Union to first place.
The Union were heading for defeat until the 79th minute when substitute Kevin Byrnes equalized for Gladbach’s Nico Elvidi in the first half. In the end, Dukhi headed through the crowd of players to head in Jimmy Leveling’s cross from a routine corner, sparking wild celebrations from the Union players and fans.
Union move back to one point ahead of Bayern Munich, who beat Mainz 6-2 on Saturday, with three games to play until the Bundesliga breaks for the World Cup.
Midfielder Rani Khedira said it showed “the character in this squad” that Union could keep up their form despite a packed schedule in the Bundesliga and Europa League. Khedira paid tribute to the “crazy fans” who led the team to victory on the roof of the Union.
Union were celebrating what Christopher Trammell thought was the winning goal in the 87th before video review found it was the second time VAR had gone against Union when Khedira’s shot was deflected by teammate Sheraldo Baker in the first half. Dissolved at the elbow.
After Elvidi gave Gladbach the lead from a corner in the 33rd minute, substitute Behrens responded by beating goalkeeper Tobias Seipel in the 79th minute, although he scored in the process. Seipel was hit by a fist as the keeper tried to clear the ball away. Behrens returned to the ground before celebrating with teammates. He was able to play and score again about three minutes later, ending the game with a bruised and swollen right cheekbone.
The dramatic victory was a boost for Union, who were four points ahead of Bayern until losing to Bayern’s threatened Bochum last week.
