Stephen Eustaquio and Evelyn Wiens have been named Canadian Soccer Players of the Month for October.
Eustaquio helped FC Porto qualify for the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League while Evelyn Wiens provided some offense in Canada’s win over two October friendlies in Europe.
Eustaquio and Porto won three straight UEFA Champions League group matches in October to finish top two in Group B, returning the Portuguese club to the competition’s knockout stages for the first time in two seasons.
He opened his Champions League account on 26 October in a 4–0 win against Club Brugge, earning Porto a place in the next round. Including his start on Tuesday, when he scored in a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, he is only the second Canadian midfielder to start every game in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League season ( after Atiba Hutchinson).
Wiens helped Canada to two wins in the October window.
He came off the bench and took part in Argentina’s own goal in Canada’s 2–0 win. She started in Canada’s 4–0 win over Morocco, scoring a goal and getting another assist from Jesse Fleming.
At club level in Dymalsvenskan, Sweden, Wiens scored two more goals in four matches with Kristianstads DFF.
