FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Djordje Mihajlovic and Lasci Lippalin scored in the first eight minutes to lead CF Montreal to a 3-1 victory over Inter Miami in the regular season finale on Sunday.
Montreal needed a win and a loss by the Philadelphia Union to claim the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Union beat Toronto 4-0.
Inter Miami, who had already clinched a spot in the playoffs, saw their four-game winning streak come to an end at home.
Mihajlovic scored for Montreal (21-9-5) in the fifth minute, and LaPlain added a goal three minutes later on an assist from Mihajlovic. Kei Kamara scored in the 36th minute to make it 3-0 at the end of the half.
Mihajlovic and Kamara scored nine goals apiece for Montreal, second only to Rommel Cuyto’s team-high 15. It was Lappalinen’s third goal.
Montreal won six more games than ever this season, scoring 65 points to match their previous high of 14. Montreal finished with 15 one-goal wins, second only to New England’s record of 18 set last season. The club scored 63 goals (in a half) this campaign, surpassing their previous record by 11.
Inter Miami scored in the 85th minute on an own goal by Montreal’s Joel Waterman.
Gonzalo Higuain had his five-game goal streak end for Inter Miami (14-15-6).
