Forge FC won their third CPL title by defeating Atlético Ottawa

OTTAWA — A first-half goal from Alessandro Hojaberpour and a second-half insurance marker from David Chouinier were enough to give Forge FC a 2-0 victory over Atlético Ottawa on Sunday in the Canadian Premier League final.

Forge FC has played in every CPL final in the league’s four-year history, winning the North Star Shield in 2019, 2020 and now 2022. They have won three of these competitions.

Atlético Ottawa were playing in their first league final in their four-year history and were trying to complete their rags-to-riches story. Finishing last in the CPL in 2021, Atlético were this year’s regular season champions and as a result hosted Sunday’s final.

Holding a 1-0 lead to start the second half, Forge FC looked to increase their lead early in the second half, but two brilliant saves by Atlético keeper Nathan Ingham – Tristan Borges and Aboubakar Sissoko – kept the difference at one.

Atlético came close to equalizing in the 75th minute, but Triston Henry made a brilliant save from Ollie Bassett’s Sergio Camus Perujo goal.

The ensuing corner failed for Atlético and Forge FC went 2-0 up thanks to Choiniere’s goal in the 78th minute.

It was him.

Atlético started the game with their usual style of sitting back and waiting for an opportunity to counter attack. No one came.

It was actually quite the opposite, as Forge FC pressed to the point where they had five corner kicks early on. Neither was successful but seemed to keep Atlético on their toes.

Forge FC had four shot attempts in the first half to just one by Atlético Ottawa. The only recorded shot by either side in the first half came from a set piece by Forge FC as Hojabarpur took the lead in the 28th minute with a 1-0 free kick by Borges.

It then became a difficult task for Atlético as they never conceded a goal at home against FC Forge, including in four regular season games this year.

Atlético came alive in attack in the dying minutes of the opening half, but despite some good ball movement, they were unable to penetrate the Forge defense to get a shot on goal.
