Former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has opened an assault trial

LONDON – Former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs, adored by fans throughout his 24-year career, has a more sinister side to his character, prosecutors said Monday when he accused a former girlfriend of He was charged with assault and coercion. .

Prosecutor Peter Wright told the jury at Manchester Street Crown Court in Manchester that while Giggs’ football skills were a thing of beauty, his off-field life was very different.

“At home or in the privacy of his own private life behind closed doors, we say the facts reveal, a very sinister and very sinister side to his character,” Wright told the jury. “It was a private life that involved physical and psychological abuse of a woman he loved.”

Giggs, 48, is accused of assaulting and causing grievous bodily harm to Kate Greville, 36, at her home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, in November 2020. He is also accused of common assault on Greville’s younger sister during the same incident. Also between August 2017 and November 2020 using controlling and coercive behavior towards his ex-girlfriend.

Giggs has denied all allegations. He stood down as Wales manager in June, saying he did not want to jeopardize preparations for the World Cup in Qatar later this year. He had been on leave since November.

Wright said the case arose out of an incident on November 1, 2020, which began when Giggs and Greville were out with friends at the Stock Exchange Hotel in Manchester.

During the evening, Greville decided to end their relationship because of Giggs’ behavior and because she knew he had cheated on her.

Greville left the hotel as soon as possible, planning to return to the home she shared with Giggs, retrieve her belongings, and leave before she came home, Wright said. Greville asked his sister to meet him at home for support.

The plan fails as Giggs arrives home earlier than expected and argues with Greville as he tries to prevent her from leaving. A physical altercation ensued when Greville took Giggs’ cell phone to use as a bargaining chip and Giggs tried to grab her device. He said Greville’s sister was punched in the jaw after she tried to intervene.

“At this point, we say, the defendant completely lost control and he deliberately hit Kate’s head, causing her lips to swell and bruise,” the prosecutor said.
