VANCOUVER – A provincial court judge in North Vancouver has sentenced Bob Berarda, the former coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps and Soccer Canada, to two years in prison for sex crimes involving four female players.

Judge Dean Ghaffar said Berarda had “extensively harmed” and violated the sexual integrity of four “youth” footballers, three of whom were under 18 at the time of the offences.

Ghaffar says Berarda will spend about 16 months of the sentence in prison, while the remaining eight months will be spent in the community under conditions that were still imposed on him.

This will be followed by a three-year trial.

The gaffer says Berarda was in a position of trust with each of the victims, fearing that denying his interest in them would damage his football career.

Berarda, 55, pleaded guilty in February to three counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual contact with a minor.
