Ligue 1 round: Pereira heads up a late winner as leaders PSG win at Lorient

PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain needed a late goal from defender Danilo Pereira on Sunday to win 2-1 at Lorient and restore its five-point lead at the top of the French league.

Pereira headed home Neymar’s corner in the 81st minute as PSG maintained their comfortable distance from second-place Lens.

Lionel Messi was rested for the game due to some inflammation of his Achilles tendon. The Argentina star, who will win the World Cup for the first time in his illustrious career, is expected to resume training next week.

Messi was replaced by 20-year-old Hugo Ikitek, who marked a rare start by setting up Neymar’s opener after nine minutes. Neymar’s 11th league goal moved him up the scoring charts alongside teammate Kylian Mbappe.

Fourth-placed Lorient equalized on 53 with club top scorer Terem Moffi’s ninth goal of the campaign.

Midfielder Enzo Le Face sent the Nigerian striker flying clear, veteran centre-back Sergio Ramos didn’t cover him and Moffi dismissed former goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Moffi hit the crossbar shortly after as Llorente stepped up, but then Pereira failed to clear Neymar’s corner.

In the final match, third-placed Rennes visited seventh-placed Lille and new Lyon coach Laurent Blanc was looking for a third straight win when his team visited Marseille.
