MADRID (AP) — Sevilla’s struggles continued in the Spanish league on Sunday with a 1-1 draw with Villarreal, leaving the club closer to the relegation zone and increasing pressure on coach Julian Lopetegui.
It was Sevilla’s seventh game without a win in eight games in all competitions this season. It sits just one point above the relegation zone after six league matches.
Former Spain and Real Madrid coach Lopetegui has come under fire for the team’s poor start and many fans have called for a change in command. Sevilla enter the season amid high expectations after a fourth-place finish in 2021-22, when it often remains close to the top.
“I’m not talking about the future, it’s too complicated,” Lopetegui said. “I can only talk about the present. There is still a lot to play for and we will try to improve and compete.
Sevilla’s only win this season was at Espanyol in the league last week. It has lost four of its next six games, including a 4-0 loss to Manchester City in the Champions League group stage and a 3-0 loss to Barcelona in the Spanish league, also at home.
Sevilla took the lead on Sunday with a goal by Oliver Torres after Isco Alarcón’s assist, but Alex Baena equalized for the hosts in the 51st minute.
Unai Emery’s Villarreal are close to the top of the table and looking for a fourth win in six league matches. It has 11 points, six more than Sevilla.
Villarreal play their home games at the Levante stadium in the nearby city of Valencia due to renovation work at the La Ceramica stadium.
Getafe stays warm
Getafe won 2-0 at 10-man Osasuna for their second straight win after a poor start to the season.
The hosts played with 10 men in the 43rd minute after Chemi Avila was sent off with a straight red card for a serious foul.
Juan Iglesias put Getafe ahead in the 30th and Gaston Alvarez added to the lead in the 76th.
Getafe had opened with three defeats and one draw and were in the relegation zone. Osasuna have been one of the hottest clubs at the start of the season, winning four of their first five league games.
Defending champions Real Madrid visit city rivals Atletico Madrid later on Sunday to try to take the lead from Barcelona, who beat Elche 3-0 at home to their fifth straight on Saturday. Defeated for victory.
