LONDON (AP) — Newcastle, Leeds and Brighton carried their strong Premier League form into the English League Cup on Wednesday.
All three top-flight clubs reached the third round despite fielding line-ups filled with fringe players who have featured little in their teams’ unbeaten start to league play.
Newcastle were hit hardest, needing to come from behind to beat fourth-tier Tranmere Rovers 2-1 with goals from Jamal Lascelles in the 40th minute and Chris Wood in the 52nd minute from Kieran Trippier.
With a 3-0 win over Chelsea in the league, Leeds beat third-tier Barnsley 3-1 after Colombian winger Luis Sinestra scored his first goal for the club. Matthews Clinch scored two more goals for Leeds, one of which was a penalty.
Brighton have already secured wins against Manchester United and West Ham in the league and have found it easy to deal with third-tier Forest Green.
Deniz Undav, making his first start for the club following an off-season move from Belgian side Union SG, Steven Alzat and Eoin Ferguson were the scorers in the 3-0 win.
Second-tier team Bristol City was the next team to progress on Wednesday.
Fulham were the only Premier League team to be eliminated in the second round. In the third round, Premier League teams that play in European competitions enter the League Cup.
