Ochoa’s title-defending World Cup tie between Mexico and Poland ended in a goalless draw

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Robert Lewandowski’s second-half penalty attempt was saved by Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, leaving Poland to a 0-0 draw at the World Cup on Tuesday.

Poland’s leading scorer at the World Cup with 76 goals remains without a team.

Lewandowski was awarded a penalty following a VAR review after Hector Moreno grabbed his shirt and pulled him down. Ochoa, playing in his fifth World Cup, screamed in celebration after his stop, chanting “Memo!” Sending slogans.

While Mexico dominated, Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny turned away all three of El Tri’s shots.

The goalless draw was a good result for Argentina, who were beaten 2-1 by Saudi Arabia in their previous Group C match. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, are widely considered favorites to advance.

Mexico has reached the knockout stage in the last seven World Cups, but the “quinto partido,” or fifth game, has eluded the team. Al Tri’s best World Cup performances were reaching the quarter-finals as hosts in 1970 and 1986.

Poland qualified for their second consecutive World Cup. This team was eliminated from the group stage in 2018.

Jorge Sanchez had a good chance for Mexico in the 44th minute, but Suzzini, who plays for Juventus, hit the crossbar.

It was Ochava’s denial of Lewandowski, who moved to Barcelona from Bayern Munich this season and has 13 goals in 14 appearances, that filled the stadium with plenty of green jerseys.

It wasn’t the first time Ochoa had hit soccer’s biggest stage: in 2014 he made six saves in a scoreless draw with Brazil, who were favorites to host the tournament. He even rejected Brazil striker Neymar’s header and later called it “the game of life”.

El Tri has faced criticism in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Mexico’s all-time leading goalscorer, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, was dropped for Qatar by coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino. Hernandez, who currently plays for the LA Galaxy, has played in the last three World Cups, but has not played with the national team since 2019.

Martino was also criticized for including Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Raul Jimenez, who is struggling with a neck injury. Replaced by Hannity Martin to start, Jimenez came on as a substitute in the second half.

This match was held at the 974 Stadium, code-named Qatar. The stadium was built from old shipping containers and will eventually be dismantled – a solution to Qatar’s “white elephant” stadiums, which have been largely unused after other World Cups.

History was made there too. France’s Stéphanie Fraparte became the first woman to serve as fourth official at a men’s World Cup.

Frapart joins Japan’s Yamashita Yoshimi and Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga among the 36 referees selected for the tournament.
