The deal is reportedly worth a fee of £4.5m with bonuses of up to £5m included in the package.

Cowan was previously in talks to move to fellow Championship side Norwich City, although talks broke down when the club could not meet financial demands from CF Montreal.

The 20-year-old has two goals and three assists in 21 games for Montreal this season, including 15 starts.

Montreal is second in the Eastern Conference with 49 points behind only Philadelphia, with a record of 16 wins, four losses and nine draws this season, eight places ahead of Canadian Eastern Conference members Toronto FC.
