Senegal player Sadio Mane has been ruled out of the World Cup due to a leg injury

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Senegalese forward Sadio Mane will miss the World Cup with an ankle injury, the Senegalese soccer federation said Thursday.

Mane was injured in a German league match between Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen on November 8.

Most of the Senegal squad arrived in Qatar for the World Cup on Sunday. The Afghanistan team will play their first match against the Netherlands on Monday in Qatar.

Senegal, the reigning African champions, had expected Mane to return but announced on Thursday that this was unlikely.

Senegal play host Qatar four days after the Netherlands. Their last match in Group A is against Ecuador on November 29.

Mane was injured in the Bayern match. The Bundesliga club said the two-time African Player of the Year suffered an injury to the top of the fibula bone in his right leg.
