Teenage substitute Cristian Volpato scored and set up another as Roma cruised to a 3-1 win over 10th-placed Hellas Verona in Serie A on Monday.
Volpto put his side ahead with two minutes remaining and Stephane El Shaarawy set up in stoppage time as Roma moved up to fourth at city rivals Lazio, ahead of next week’s capital derby.
Verona defender Paul Davidowicz scored from the start but also scored in the 36th minute. Niccolo Zaniolo equalized on the stroke of half-time.
Verona are three points from safety.
Roma knew they could move into the Champions League places with a win and had a stunning chance to take the lead in the 19th minute when Tammy Ibrahim ran onto a through ball and slotted past the goalkeeper but instead it was empty. The three points were assured when 18-year-old Volpto crossed the ball to El Shaarawi for an angled drive from Verona goalkeeper Lorenzo Montepo.
Monza played Bologna late in their first game after defender Pablo Mari was killed in a knife attack at a Milan supermarket.
Marrey, who is on loan from Arsenal, was released from hospital on Sunday after surgery. A supermarket worker, Luis Fernando Ruggieri, was killed in Thursday’s attack and there will be a minute’s silence before the start in his honour.
