Canada will play its final practice match before the World Cup in Qatar on November 17 against Japan in Dubai.

The match is scheduled to be held at the Al Maktoum Stadium in the United Arab Emirates. .

Pooled in Group F, the Canadians open World Cup play against No. 2 Belgium on Nov. 23, while Japan opens Group E against Germany on the same day.

The Canadians next face No. 15 Croatia on Nov. 27 and No. 23 Morocco on Dec. 1.

“With an eight-week gap between our September games (against Qatar and Uruguay) and our first game at the FIFA World Cup, it is important for our players to prepare with our pre-tournament game against Japan. “Experience international intensity,” Canadian coach John Herdman said in a statement.

“Japan has consistently progressed from the group stage at the last FIFA World Cup, so this will be a good test for the group.”

Japan, ranked 24th in the world, finished second (7-2-1) to Saudi Arabia (7-2-1) in Group B of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) AFC Qualifying. On arrival he secured his place in Qatar. .

This is Japan’s seventh straight trip to the World Cup.

Canada, currently ranked 43rd, has lost both previous meetings with Japan – 2-1 in Doha in March 2013 and 3-0 in Niigata, Japan in May 2011 (Confederation in the cup).

The Canadians will face Qatar on Sept. 23 at the General Arena in Vienna, followed by a game against Uruguay on Sept. 27 at Stadion Tlenpol in Bratislava, Slovakia. The Uruguay match was also originally scheduled in Vienna.

Uruguay is in 13th place and Qatar, the AFC Asian Cup champion, is in 48th place.

Hosts Qatar will play in Group A of the World Cup alongside Ecuador, Senegal and the Netherlands. Uruguay are in Group H with Portugal, Ghana and South Korea.

Canada has only played Uruguay once, a 3-1 loss in the Orange Bowl in February 1986.

The September window marks Canada’s first away trip to Europe since March 2018. Canada last played an Asian rival in November 2016 and a South American team in 2014.

Herdman’s team last played in June, beating No. 84 Curacao 4-0 in Vancouver and beating No. 84 Honduras 2-1 in San Pedro Sula in CONCACAF Nations League play.

A warm-up match against Iran in early June was canceled due to criticism from the opposition. Panama hosted Iran in Vancouver on June 5, but the game was canceled due to a stalemate in contract talks between the players and Canadian Soccer.

Canada qualified for Qatar with a 4–0 win over Jamaica on March 27 at BMO Field in Toronto. The Canadians concluded their qualifying campaign in Panama on March 30, going 8-2-4 in the final round of qualifying in CONCACAF.

The Canadians went 14-4-2 in the three qualifying rounds.
