The Emir of Qatar thanked Putin for his support in organizing the World Cup

ASTANA, Kazakhstan – Qatar’s emir thanked Vladimir Putin on Thursday for his support for Russia in hosting the next World Cup.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani also praised Russia for hosting the football tournament in 2018.

“After Russia achieved great success in organizing the 2018 World Cup, Russia’s friends have been very supportive of Qatar, especially with the organizing committee of the 2022 World Cup,” Amir said. “We are grateful for this and we are proud of this relationship. It will continue until the end of the World Cup. I am very happy to meet you, Mr. President. Thank you.”

The Russian President wished Qatar success in hosting this year’s event, which begins on November 20.

“We are also doing everything we can in terms of transferring the experience of preparation for the World Cup, you know that, we just had the opportunity to talk to you about it,” Putin said. “I want to wish you success in holding this great event. I am sure it will be (successful).

Neither leader explained exactly how Russia had helped Qatar, the first Arab country to host the World Cup.

One area where Qatar has followed Russia’s example is requiring fans to sign up for a mandatory ID known as a modesty card. Similar to the Fan ID scheme introduced in Russia in 2018, fans use digital ID cards to enter the country and only enter World Cup stadiums if they present the card.

Russia reached the World Cup quarter-finals as hosts in 2018 but are not playing in Qatar after being banned from the qualifying play-offs following Ukraine’s attack.
