MILAN (AP) — United States defender Sergio Aguero hopes to get more playing time ahead of this year’s World Cup in Qatar after joining Serie A champions AC Milan on transfer deadline day.

Milan also have the right to buy Dest from Barcelona at the end of his season-long loan deal, with a fee reportedly set at 20 million euros ($19.9 million).

“I have to get minutes for the World Cup. I have to play. Not only for the World Cup, I just want to always play,” Diest said in an interview with Milan TV on Friday. “They (Milan) gave me a great opportunity. So I didn’t even think twice. I was like: I have to do it. I want to play so it was an easy decision.”

Dist began his career at Ajax before moving to Barcelona for €21 million (then $24.7 million) two years ago but he never quite lived up to expectations and was unable to establish himself as a regular starter.

He had plenty of minutes in his first season but then his playing time gradually decreased and the 21-year-old Diest knew that with the World Cup approaching in November, he needed to have a regular place in the team.

Dest has a Surinamese-American father and Dutch mother and chose to play for the United States rather than the Netherlands, where he was born and raised. He has scored two goals in 17 games for the national team.

“Actually, everything happened really fast, like in one day,” Dest said of the move to Milan. “I had to make a really quick decision to change my life, to go to another club, another country, another culture.

“I love this club. It’s a club I wanted to play for when I was young. I think it’s a good step for me, a good chance to play again. I’m really happy and proud. To play for this club and I will give my best.

Dist, who is a speedy defender, originally started out as a winger in Ajax’s youth academy before switching to full-back.

“It was a good decision to take me back full because my features are more pronounced,” he said. “Because I can go forward, I can defend. I have stamina so I can go up and down.

“It was the best position and the best position for me, right back and left back. Just the best decision to make in professional football.

Destin can get off to a rough start. The Rossoneri’s next match is a derby against city rivals Inter Milan on Saturday.

Milan finished ahead of second-placed Inter last season for their first title in 11 years, but the positions have changed compared to the previous campaign.

“Another league again and it’s going to be a tough league. Some good opponents. We’ve got good opponents,” Dust said.

He then pointed to the center of his chest, where the Italian flag rests on Milan’s jersey – the emblem of the reigning champions in Serie A.

“We have the badge in the middle, so we need to keep it and make sure that next year we still have it on our shirts,” Deist said.
