LONDON – Wesley Fofana became the most expensive defender in football history on Wednesday after securing a move from Premier League rivals Leicester to Chelsea for a reported fee of 75 million pounds ($87 million).
The re-signing of the 21-year-old French center has cost Chelsea around £270 million this transfer window, most of which is on defenders. Left-back Marc Cucorella ($65 million) and centre-back Kaleido Koulibaly ($38 million) have already moved to Stamford Bridge.
England international Harry Maguire, who also left Leicester to join Manchester United in 2019 for £80m, is the only defender to cost more than Fofana. Virgil van Dijk completed a move to Liverpool in January 2018 for the same fee as Fofana.
A ball-playing center back who is an excellent reader of the game, Fofana has signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea.
“Wesley is a very promising defender who has already proven his quality in the Premier League at a young age,” said Chelsea chairman Todd Bohly, who spent big in his first transfer window before buying the club from Roman Abramovich. done
“We are delighted that we have been able to bring some of Europe’s most exciting talent to Chelsea and further strengthen our squad, both for this season and beyond.”
Fofana, who has never played for France’s senior national team, joined Leicester from Saint-Etienne in 2020 and has made 52 appearances, including 37 in the Premier League.
He was left out for the last Leicester game as he looked to make a move to Chelsea and was injured training with the under-23s.
“The last two days have been really big days for me and I’m very happy.” Fofana said. “I trained with the team this morning and it’s a dream for me. I’m very excited to start playing for the fans and the club.
“I’m here to win trophies – Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, whatever. I’m here to win and the club is built to win trophies so I’m here to continue. “
